Part 1 of 4 / The beginner guide

Before you invest

Decide what you are investing for, check your finances are ready and choose an amount you can afford to leave invested.

Step 1. Decide what you are investing for

Before choosing an investment, ask what you want this money to help you do. Retirement, supporting your family and a cost next summer need different approaches.

Write down your goal, when you expect to need the money and whether that date is flexible. Money for essential spending soon should not depend on an investment holding its value.

An example“I want to build money for my future over the next 15 years. I do not expect to need it for everyday spending.”

Step 2. Check whether you are ready to invest

Look at your income, essential bills and debt before deciding what is genuinely available. Keep accessible savings for unexpected costs; the amount depends on your expenses, income stability and responsibilities.

Paying down expensive debt will usually deserve priority: the interest you avoid is more certain than an investment return. If you are not ready to invest, building savings and continuing to learn are useful first steps.

  • Can I cover my essential bills and unexpected costs?
  • Do I have expensive debt to address?
  • Could I leave this money invested if its value fell?

Step 3. Choose an amount you can afford

There is no single starting amount. Your budget, the provider’s minimum and the costs all matter. Choose an amount that does not put pressure on bills or emergency savings.

Some providers offer fractional shares, which let you buy part of a share. Availability, selling rules and transfer restrictions vary. Check them before opening an account.

An exampleIf you have €150 left after planned spending and set aside €100 for savings and upcoming costs, €50 might remain to consider investing. This is a budgeting illustration, not a recommended amount.

Investing involves risk and you can lose money. This guide explains the basics rather than recommending investments. New words? See the investing glossary.
